Guardians appoints Head of Asset Allocation

The Guardians of NZ Superannuation, the Crown entity that manages the $58 billion NZ Super Fund, has appointed Dr Charles Hyde as Head of Asset Allocation.
Dr Hyde, who will report to Chief Investment Officer Stephen Gilmore, will take up his new role on 1 July 2021.
Mr Gilmore said he was pleased to be able to make an internal appointment to one of the key investment roles at the Guardians, following an extensive external search process. “The Asset Allocation team is the unifying force behind our investment decision-making and I look forward to working with Charles and his team as the NZ Super Fund continues to grow.”
As Head of Asset Allocation Dr Hyde will oversee the construction of the Fund’s Reference Portfolio, the allocation of risk capital across the Fund and the Guardians’ economics function.
Dr Hyde joined the Guardians in 2015 as a Senior Investment Strategist, in which role he has chaired one of the Guardians’ risk budgeting teams and been closely involved in a number of key projects including the 2020 review of the Reference Portfolio, reviews of the Guardians’ investment hurdles and proxies, and the Guardians’ climate change strategy. He has also been heavily involved in developing the Guardians’ equity factors investment strategy.
Dr Hyde’s previous roles include Head of Quantitative Research at MIR Investment Management; Head of Equities Research and Equity Quant Strategies at CBA Institutional Equities Research; and Principal Economist - Transfer Pricing at Deloitte. Dr Hyde has also held a number of academic roles in finance and economics at Macquarie University, the University of Sydney and the University of Melbourne. He has a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley.
